Pontoons win on a very simple argument, and it is not about performance. They get used. A bass boat gets used by the person who bought it. A pontoon gets used by that person plus their spouse, their grandchildren, their neighbours and anyone who has ever been nervous stepping into a boat that rocks. Flat deck, rails all the way round, real seating, shade over your head and enough room that nobody is climbing over anybody.

Length, Tubes and Horsepower: What Actually Matters

Three decisions determine how happy you are with a pontoon, and none of them is colour.

Length. This is the one people underestimate. The difference between a shorter and longer pontoon is not just seating, it is ride quality and how the boat behaves with weight on board. If you regularly carry six or more people, buy the length now. Adding it later means selling the boat.

Tube configuration. Two tubes are lighter, cheaper and perfectly adequate for calm lake use at moderate speed. A third tube adds buoyancy, lets the boat carry more horsepower and more weight, and makes a real difference in chop and when turning. If you want to pull a tube or a skier, or you carry a full load regularly, it is worth the money. If you cruise slowly on a calm lake, it is not.

Horsepower. Do not underpower it. An underpowered pontoon with eight people aboard on a windy afternoon is a genuinely unpleasant boat, and the money you saved evaporates the first time you need to get back across the lake in a hurry. Buy toward the upper end of what the model is rated for rather than the bottom.

If watersports turn out to be the main event rather than an occasional extra, a fiberglass deck boat will pull a tube or a skier better than any pontoon at the same money. And if fishing is the real priority and the family use is secondary, an aluminum fishing boat costs less and does that job better. We carry all three, so it is worth looking at the alternatives before you commit.

Our shop handles outboard service and repowers, steering and controls, batteries and charging, livewell and bilge pumps, lighting, stereo and accessory wiring, bimini and cover fitting, and trailer bearings, lights and brakes.

Two things are worth knowing about pontoons specifically. First, if the boat stays in the water on a lift or at a dock rather than being trailered, keep an eye on the tubes and the transom mounting. Boats that live wet need different attention from boats that live on a trailer, and it is easy to leave one on a lift for a season and not look at it.

Second, furniture and canvas are what age first in Florida. Sun destroys vinyl seating and bimini fabric faster than anything mechanical fails, and a boat with cracked seats looks tired long before it runs badly. A cover and covered storage are the cheapest maintenance you will ever do, and they show up directly in the trade value.

The usual fuel advice applies. A boat used a handful of times a year needs stabiliser in the tank, or it needs the fuel system cleaned come spring.

Financing, Trades and Offers

Marine financing runs longer terms than a vehicle loan, which brings a lot of pontoons within reach that look expensive on the sticker. Start an application online before you come in. Rate, term and approval depend on credit and are not guaranteed in advance.

Factory programs and rebates change through the year with end dates attached, so call and ask what is live on the model and length you want rather than trusting an older advertisement.

We take trades. Bring titles for the boat, motor and trailer, since Florida treats them separately. On a pontoon, the condition of the seating, canvas and flooring moves the appraisal as much as the outboard hours do, so a boat that has been kept covered is worth noticeably more.

Before You Buy a Pontoon

Decide where it will live first

A pontoon that stays on a lift at a lakefront home can be as long as you like. One that has to be trailered, launched and stored at home is limited by your driveway, your gate, your ramp and your tow vehicle. Work out the storage answer before you fall for a specific length, because it is the constraint that actually binds.

Bring the people who will be on it

If a grandparent is going to board this boat regularly, have them step onto it in the showroom. Gate width, the step up from a dock and how easy it is to get back aboard from the water are the things that determine whether a boat gets used or admired.

Take shade seriously

Central Florida sun between May and September is not something you tolerate for four hours. A good bimini is the difference between a boat you use all summer and one you use in the morning only. Look at how much of the deck it actually covers with the sun overhead, not just whether one is fitted.

Plan for the extras that get used

A boarding ladder, a good stereo, a cover, and depending on your water a trolling motor or an anchor system. These are worth building into the deal so they are fitted properly, and they are the items owners tell us afterwards they use every trip.

Florida requirements before you launch

Vessel registration is required, and Florida requires a boating safety education card for operators born on or after a specified date. Life jackets, a fire extinguisher and a sound signalling device must be aboard, and children under a certain age must wear a life jacket while the vessel is under way. Confirm the current rules with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before your first trip.

Buying a used pontoon

Look under the deck at the crossmembers and the tube mounting, and look at the tubes themselves for dents and previous repairs. Press on the flooring for soft spots, especially near the transom. Check seat bases as well as seat covers, since rotten plywood under a nice vinyl cushion is a common and expensive surprise. Run every pump, light and the stereo. Ask for outboard hours and how the boat was stored.
